How to Clean Your Roof Without Stepping On It

It’s a simple fact of home owning. The roof needs cleaning every now and then, ideally every year or so if you want to get the most out of it.

Not only does regular maintenance mean you keep on top of problems like moss growth, it also brightens up the appearance of your property, making it attractive to visitors or potential buyers.

There are a few problems, however, that might be putting you off.

It’s, er... ‘up there’

Not a fan of heights? You’re not alone. When it comes to getting on a roof, it’s not an irrational fear, either. Damp weather makes moss or slate very slippery, not to mention getting up and down a ladder. It may be stating the obvious, but extreme caution is necessary when navigating high spots.

You need the right tools - and experience

It’s easy to think that all you need is hot water and a brush to clear the surface, but it can get complicated. Some plants and stains such as bird mess require special chemicals to get off, and you might struggle to get to some parts of the roof with standard household items. Paying for specialist products — and workmanship — is costly, but worth it if you want a nice, deep clean.

You might cause further damage

Putting a bit too much weight on roofing material might cause it to crack or break. If you’re pretty handy then you may be able to repair it but, if not, then you risk doing further damage with a botch job. Repairing roof damage requires a lot of time and attention, too, which is something you may not have too much of.

The Stepless Approach

There is one way of doing it that minimizes damage, uses specialist equipment….and doesn’t involve setting a single foot on the roof.

It does involve a mobile platform, and motorized spinner and biocide solution, though.

Best delivered in two stages, it’s designed to loosen, remove and disinfect the surface to keep it in tip-top condition for as long as possible.

The first stage is the initial clean, which uses the spinner to skim over the surface and remove the vegetation and that thin layer of top dirt.

Next comes the main clean, where applying a special biocide cleaning solution kills lichen and  microscopic mold spores that penetrate tiles. Such a deep clean not only makes the roof gleam, but it also eliminates rapid regrowth and puts off the next clean for a good while.

This expert treatment does also require expertise and scaffolding, which is why employing a company like ProTeam Clean is the best way to guarantee a spotless roof. Our IPAF-certified team are rigorously trained in health and safety and will do the job to the highest level of precision and efficiency.
